Petra Diamonds Limited is an independent diamond mining group supplying gem-quality rough diamonds to the global market from its renowned operations in South Africa.

The Group operates two underground mines—Cullinan Mine and Finsch—and is firmly committed to the highest standards of safety, ethics, and responsible mining. 

Cullinan Mine, located northeast of Pretoria, is Petra’s flagship operation and a world-class kimberlite deposit. The mine has a long history of producing some of the world’s most celebrated blue diamonds. Among its most notable finds is the 3,106-carat rough Cullinan Diamond, discovered in 1905, which is still the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered. The stone was cut to form the two largest cut diamonds in the British Crown Jewels. Cullinan Mine is further renowned for its Type IIa whites and a varied product mix.

Since acquiring Cullinan Mine in 2008, Petra Diamonds has transformed the operation through substantial capital investment into a world-class, highly optimized diamond mine. Today, efficient block-cave mining and advanced processing technology maximize the value of this unique asset. The mine produces approximately 1.5m carats of diamonds annually and has potential to continue mining into the late 2040s.

The mine runs a range of community training and development programmes focused on building skills within host communities, delivering long-term benefits for all stakeholders. In addition, it supports students through bursary schemes and runs extensive wellness programmes. An estimated 20,000 people in surrounding communities benefit from the mine when applying the recognised x10 multiplier effect.

Finsch has been in continuous operation since 1967 and ranks among the world’s most significant diamond mines. It is South Africa’s second-largest diamond operation by production and a cornerstone asset within the country’s diamond-mining landscape. Originally developed as an open-pit mine, Finsch successfully transitioned to underground mining in 1990 and today operates a large-scale, state-of-the-art mining infrastructure, supported by a modern processing plant. In 2023, a new fleet was introduced and is operated by a highly capable team. The mine produces approximately 1m carats of diamonds annually. Petra Diamonds operates Finsch since 2011.

Finsch is a consistent producer of sought-after octahedral diamonds. The mine is particularly renowned for its highly commercial production profile of +5 carat goods. In addition, Finsch yields a consistent supply of high-quality smaller diamonds. The mine is also one of the few operations globally known for the recovery of natural fancy yellow diamonds.

Located in South Africa’s Northern Cape, Finsch has played a long-standing role in regional economic development, providing skilled employment, supporting local communities, and contributing meaningfully to the country’s diamond beneficiation and export sectors.
